Today I am giving a huge, Hello Kitty, birthday shout out to my niece Lilly. Her birthday was actually on the 18th of August but much of my family will be converging on her home in a few hours for her official 2nd Birthday celebration. So I waited until today to post her design. It seems like only yesterday she was just a little tiny baby. They grow up so quick, sniff, sniff. Happy Birthday Lilly, I love you! ~Uncle Sean.
Today I got behind schedule so this one is a quicky. And, It turned out better than I thought it might. It was very difficult to find any good images of Elvis for the movie Spinout, but I found a great image of the car. Great car! That’s all for today, see you tomorrow! ~Sean
Today we step back a bit with a tribute to Elvis’s movie career. I chose to create something inspired by Hawaii. I repeated a scene from the movie and framed it with in the shape of a strip of film. I also created a Hawaiian print pattern with some hibiscus shaped flowers. I chose red because, as you can see, Elvis wore a red Hawaiian shirt in the movie. Perhaps not my best creation thus far but also not my worst. See you all tomorrow. ~Sean
Well, I really didn’t intend for it to become Elvis Week but I am really glad it’s going that way! I have been having tons of fun creating these Elvis pieces. Today we move our styling into the 1970’s with a tribute to Vegas Elvis who at that time was also tons of fun. “Can I have another jelly doughnut? er’ how ’bout one a them there peanut butter and bannaner sanwiches?” Sorry. ~Sean
Today I decided to create another Elvis inspired design. While searching the internet for some Elvis imagery yesterday I found a really great photo from the hit Jail House Rock. I chose not to use it in yesterday’s design. While considering my dsign today I decided that I just had to create something around it. I am envisioning an album or 45 jacket here. I even created a little logo for the Hi-Fidelity symbol. that’s about it. I had a lot of fun with this one and I hope you all like it! See you tomorrow. ~Sean
33 years ago today an American Pop Culture icon passed away. Elvis Aaron Presley changed the course of popular music during the 1950’s and 1960’s. His thumbprint can be found on modern music genres ranging from country to pop. Drawing on all his musical inspirations which included country, gospel and blues, Elvis fused these styles together to first create the Rock-A-Billy sound and soon after influence Rock And Roll pioneers of the late 50’s and 60’s, including the Beatles who went on to refine Rock And Roll and modern music even further.
Today’s design is a shout out to The King. I chose simple imagery to convey my design. The simple image of a crown and mid century inspired colors and typography take us back to the days of young Elvis and the birth of Rock And Roll. That’s all for today! Hope you like. ~Sean
Today is my final Cake design. Today I was inspired by the band’s program where they give a tree away to a lucky fan. That fan is encouraged to take the tree, plant it and nurture it. Tree winners are also encouraged to send in a post-planting photo of themselves with their tree as well as send updated photos of the tree as it grows through the years. Anyone who knows me knows that trees are a big part of my life. As a bonsai artist I certainly love the small potted trees but I am inspired and respectful of full sized trees in their natural habitat. So, Cake’s tree giveaway program is one that I fully endorse!
Today’s design features the same minimalist simplicity of many other Cake designs. I chose bright spring green for the background and darker yellow greens and medium browns for darker portions of the design. The tree with roots image is a vintage piece of clip art which I feel conveys the perfect tone for the overall design as well as the Win A Tree program. I hope you enjoy. Join me tomorrow for another band or artist. Who could it be? ~Sean
More CAKE! this time a promo poster for their upcoming Central Park show in New York City. Hope you like! I may be doing one more piece of Cake tomorrow or perhaps moving on to another band. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow. You can also suggest a band or artist by leaving a comment below or on Facebook. I love to entertain fan submissions. ~Sean
Today, another concert poster for an upcoming Cake show. This time at a venue called Toad’s Place in New Haven Connecticut. This layout contains much of the same foundational elements as in yesterday’s design. Today I created a geometric, patterned background by manipulating circles. I also used a vintage clip art image of a baker delivering a cake (and I swore I was not going to use any images of an actual cake in this series, oh well). I think it turned out pretty cool, I hope you agree. See everyone tomorrow! ~Sean
Today I created a concert poster for an actual upcoming Cake show in Clifton Park, NY. I kept with the traditional feel of a Cake album cover. The band name typeset in Copperplate Gothic. A simple subtle pattern in the back ground as well a s a simple color scheme. And a simple but iconic piece of artwork is an old time microphone. This is an actual show in September so get your tickets! Anyway, I hope you like. See everyone tomorrow! ~Sean
