uh… I’ve got nothing today. Actually this isn’t too bad. But really, I’m done for today. I hope tomorrow is more productive.

Tonight I felt like using a not-so-serious font. My original word was actually going to be serious but I switched to somber occasion at the last minute thinking the phrase would make the typesetting even more inappropriate. To me it almost like a tragic episode of The Brady Bunch or something. Like were Marsha breaks her nose or Greg gets caught with a pack of cigarettes. Hope you like, and I’ll see you again tomorrow with another crazy design!

Today I offer my quick solution for a fan submitted word. Ugly. Part of me finds the typesetting ugly, but I used it because of the casual, fun and happy feeling it evokes. The heart shapes are actually part of this particular font, otherwise I probably would have opted to include some simple floral shapes or ornaments. I suppose this design would also work for inappropriately typesetting the words sad, or hate, or unlovable.

Taking it easy today. Well maybe not so much. I hope to catch up on a lot of projects this weekend so I want to get the daily design out of the way early to open up my day for other things.
I used a random word generator to get my word today. after a couple clicks I found the word Casual to be a great choice. It has a clear meaning with a distinct opposite in the word Formal. I used two classic type styles to improperly set the word. A formal script face in the monogram “C” and a traditional face, Goudy Oldstyle, to set the word itself. I also used various ornaments to further support a formal milieu. Hope you like!

Tonight’s creation is from a fan submission. The word heifer which is a female cow. The term heifer is often used in a disparaging way to describe a fat person (woman). When first presented with the word I was not sure how it would work, but I have thought about it periodically throughout the day and the obvious, inappropriate type treatment seems to be the best solution. I have appropriately created an environment for the word which resembles a green field and blue sky. Inappropriately the typesetting is done with a condensed, lightweight typeface, also set small relative to its environs.

I have received some requests for Inappropriate Typesetting words. The word “poop” has been mentioned a couple times. I will think about that one, but for tonight I give you Mucus!
I chose to place the word in a dictionary setting, complete with its definition. I wanted to give the word a learned, sophisticated and refined feel. You know make it look as if it would never utter the word mucus in public, if at all. Perhaps it has just settled in for a relaxing evening next to the fireplace with a good classic book. Fully attired in its smoking jacket with cigar and cognac in hand.

Tonight we get back to the Inappropriate Typesetting series. Perhaps a little too easy. There is obvious lack on contrast between the background and foreground colors. But, this series is more about the typography. I chose to render the the word contrast in Futura for its structural lack of contrast. The typeface is based on precise and similar shapes and there is little to no contrast in the strokes that make the characters.

More Bonsai related workings this evening. I know I started a new theme yesterday but I need to get some things done for Bonsai Empire and I will take any opportunity to combine tasks and save some time. 🙂
You might recognize this Stone Lantern logo from Circadian Creative 2010’s Brand Re-brand series. Today I have taken the basic shape of a previous design and reworked it, hopefully for official usage. Changing the color and creating a glossy texture to the surface has given this design a whole new life. Who knows, this may become the next default user avatar for the Bonsai Empire website! We’ll see.

I smell a new theme coming on! I am not sure how it came to me this evening, but I thought about my post on Friday, Damn The Machines and thought of how I tried to evoke the feeling of a machine with a brushed metal texture on the typography. I added to the “damned” feeling by adding some rust. I was thinking about the choice of a san serif typeface. The machine like coldness and indifference of the Helvetica family.
Then I thought what about typesetting another word or phrase. What about typesetting it with an inappropriate typeface? You could convey the opposite of the verbal meaning of the word by setting it improperly with the right (or wrong) typeography! It could be really funny and I could go for some laughs! so, here we go… It’s the Innappropriate Typesetting theme! Raw Sewage anyone?
If you have any disgusting words or phrases that need to be made beautiful, or perhaps, a lovely that you would like to see rendered as a ghastly, leave your suggestions in the comments and I will try to grant you a typographical twist!

I finished my proposed images for Bonsai Empire this morning. While I’m waiting for approval or revisions I have other projects to attend to so I made the daily design another quick solution by creating this patterned image of icons based on yesterday’s acer palmatum leave shape. If B. E. likes these then they will become the new member ranking icons on their website. I think they will look rather cool compared to circles they are currently using.
