This illustration was my last one in the Bonsai Empire series. I was not sure what to expect when I started the creation process for this one, and frankly I was getting tired of illustrating bonsai at this point. But, this is by far my favorite of the 15. The style is called Sharimiki, characterized by large areas of deadwood along the trunk of the tree. You can see all 15 illustrations at Bonsai Empire’s website here.

Typically trees that feature the dead wood are not my favorite. However, this illustration is beautiful. I love the shape, the colors, the texture… it’s perfect. And it could also be my favorite of your Bonsai Empire series.
