Brand, Re-brand. Politz Enterprises Logo Redo.

Posted on July 18, 2010 by Seán Coleman

Today I’m back to re-branding. I chose a local contractor who recently underwent a minor name change. Previously Politz Construction, now Politz Enterprises. Politz is a company with a lot to offer and I feel like their existing logo doesn’t offer much to their overall image.

logo beforeThe following is my attempt to visually presenting the company’s multi-dimensional offerings. Politz provides a wide range of services. Whether you are doing a major structural renovation on your home or a small addition, or just replacement windows, Politz is worth giving a call because they do everything. Not only do they offer a wide range of services, they are licensed in several states. I wanted to create a logo that visually represents their comprehensive, multi-dimensional and top to bottom service offerings.

brand rebrnd politz logo redo

The color scheme is simple using a few shades of gray and  deep red, which the company already seems fond of. I created a three dimensional representation of a house. Politz offers major and minor home renovation and I wanted to create an image that would represent a top to bottom feeling. Here we see prominent visuals of a roof and a concrete foundation. I also wanted to visually represent the feeling of inside and out. The initials P. E. create the walls of the house which you can see through. I feel this visual demonstrates the inside and out feeling that I hoped to convey. Well that’s it for today. Hope you like, and let me know what you think!

Brand, Re-brand. Clarke Tile Logo Redo #2.

Today I have chosen to revisit the Clarke Tile logo. I do like yesterday’s submission but I think today’s version has greater visual impact.

brand rebrand - clarke tile logo redo 2

Typography – I chose a typeface called Eurostyle today. It is a sans serif and another of my favorites that I haven’t used in awhile. I used the extended style. I like the square or rectangular space created by the characters. I also like the rounded corners of the characters. I carried the rounded corners over to the shape forms above and below the company name, which I arranged to represent tiles.

Color – I chose to stick with the company’s blue color however I went a bit lighter and added to the palette by adding gradually lighter shades which go from blue to blue green and green. The orange is an accent which I think adds a bit of visual interest and draws the viewers attention, perhaps keeping their eye on the logo a bit longer. It might be interesting to experiment with the color palette a bit more and try some additional combinations. And that’s it for today! As always, I hope you like.

Brand, Re-brand. Clarke Tile Logo Redo.

Today I have chosen another local company. Clarke Tile has been in business since 1978 and from the looks of their logo I believe it. Actually the logo is pretty typical of most contracting company’s. Here is the logo and the company name (Clarke Tile Company, Inc.) generally appears below in a sans serif typeface.

ctc logo before

Today I chose to redesign their logo in a way that lets the company name become incorporated directly into the overall image. I used six diamond shapes as a background to contain the letters of the word “CLARKE”. This allows the the name CLARKE to become the most prominent and hopefully memorable part of the company name. The diamond also imply tile shapes helping to reinforce what the company does (install bathroom tiles). The remainder of the company name – “TILE COMPANY, INC.” is still clearly represented in a rectangular banner below the diamonds. I inverted the right and left sides of the rectangle to create points which will guide the viewer’s eyes into the banner and read that portion of the company name. I used blue for the main color as this is the existing company color. That’s it. Hope you like!

Brand, Re-brand. The Woodside Deli Logo #3.

Well I feel that I have redeemed myself today. I really have not liked the previous two Woodside logos but this one pleases me quite a bit. I feel that it captures the feeling of The Woodside Deli very well. It is warm and pleasant. As I mentioned previously the the walls are covered with early to mid 20th century photos, posters and advertisements. I feel this logo captures that vintage sensibility while still appearing current and relevant.

brand rebrand - the woodside deli logo 3

For color I chose a deep red with brown accents. I feel that These colors convey the preferences of Woodside Deli’s owner, staff and patrons. Many of their current promotional pieces use a similar color scheme. The ornamental wavy lines are primarily a lighter shade of brown which reminds me of the sephia tone of an antique photograph.

The Typography I chose is Americana Extra Bold. This was one of my favorite typefaces many years ago and I was recently reminded of how much I liked it during a visit to the the University of Central Florida last week. I was impressed with how effectively it was utilized on virtually all of their campus signage as well as other printed materials throughout their facilities. Here I think the typeface works well to represent a relevant, contemporary brand but also successfully captures a classic and vintage feeling to the viewer at the same time. Well that’s it. I hope you like it!

Brand, Re-brand. The Woodside Deli Logo #2.

Hmm. I’m tired today. I don’t know how I feel about today’s submission. I guess this logo represents The Woodside’s local status, not just as a favorite eatery, but a community establishment. To be sure, it is and if it were to every go away it would be missed by many for a long time to come. The circular, seal shape helps to convey this feeling of an establishment and that The Woodside is more than just a restaurant, It’s a part of the community. That’s it. I will probably do one more concept for The Woodside tomorrow. I am just not satisfied and I know I can do better.brand rebrand - the woodside deli logo 2Attention: Now you can see my daily updates on Twitter and Facebook. Brand, Re-brand. The Woodside Deli logo #1

Posted on July 11, 2010 by Seán Coleman

Today I am inspired by one of my favorite local places to eat. The Woodside Deli. The place offers a great atmosphere, sort of “you wanna go where everybody knows your name” kind of atmosphere. The fare is deli meets diner and the decor is pretty mixed, but what will really grab your attention is all of the vintage posters, photos and advertisements which are framed and hung on the walls. The walls are covered. My favorite is the Large Ronald Reagan ad for Chesterfield Cigarettes. He suggests giving everyone a carton for Christmas. Oh my, how the times have changed.

The problem with The Woodside’s branding is that they do not have any. The good thing is that they are the perfect example of a company offering something that does not need branding. The Woodside does great business, especially on Sunday mornings. People know about them and like what they offer. The Woodside does not really need to advertise or worry about their brand identity. Their identity comes form their product and service which is generally perfect. But if they were having problems then I would suggest that they settle on one logotype first and then move forward from there. I will share with you the worst of their name plates here. This one appears on their website and the imagery suggests that they offer sushi or other oriental fare (which they do not).

logo beforeIn re-creating, or creating, their logo today I drifted off course. My intention was to present the feeling of the vintage imagery hanging on their walls. I am not sure what happened here but by the time I finished I liked what I had done and wanted to share. So here it is.

brand rebrand - the woodside deli logo 1Ok, so let me explain a little. I intended to go retro and I may have succeeded to some degree, however, I think my recent trip to Florida and Kissimmee Old Town which resembles a board walk from the late 50’s or early 60’s took over my creative notions. The tan oval shape in the composition represents a bun or roll which The Woodside would use to construct one of their delicious subs. The typography is retro display type and very informal, just like The Woodside. So, my only objection to the logo is that it might portray a livelier feeling than The Woodside actually provides. Don’t get me wrong The Woodside is definitely fun, but it is also quiet, relaxed fun, not boardwalk or hotdog stand fun. So, I will be working on another logo for The Woodside, for tomorrow. Please come again to check it out.

Brand, Re-brand. Natural Surroundings Logo Redo.

Posted on July 10, 2010 by Seán Coleman
5

Today I have chosen to redo a logo that may not actually require a redo. I actually kind of like the existing logo. Here is the existing logo as it appears on the company’s web page.

logo before

I like the colors. Very neutral and very serious and professional. I feel like this logo works very well for a company that provides commercial services, services to other businesses. But, Natural Surroundings also provides services to regular consumer. Because of this I feel the logo should be a bit warmer and appealing to regular folks like you and I.

brand rebrand - natural surroundings logo redoHere I have made some significant changes. In the previous version the company name is tastefully set within a floating rectangle, behind it is the silhouette of a tree. Although the company provides landscaping services including planting trees this is not their only focus. Actually, the current logo makes me think of tree pruning service. In my redesign I have represented trees by merging several circular and oval shapes along the top to appear as a landscaped row of shrubs. The outlines of these shapes is also displayed prominently to signify planning which is what the company does. Below the company name is another area which contains a representation of paver stones which is another major aspect of the company’s business. I feel like the simple visual illustrations and inviting colors will appeal not just to commercial customers but also to residential ones.

Brand, Re-brand. Baths By RJ Logo Redo.

Posted on July 9, 2010 by Seán Coleman
2

Today’s logo is for a company called Baths by RJ. They specialize in high end bathroom remodeling projects. They are very proud of their work and from what I’ve seen they should be. The logo they are currently using is actually not that bad. My main objection is the use of the typeface Brushscript. Another observation is that the initials RJ always appear larger and most prominent in the logo. This means that they are not branding bathroom remodeling but they are branding themselves (the owners). Here is their current logo as it appears on their website.

logo before

Today I decided to give their logo a face lift. Based on my previous observations I chose to make prominent the fact that they remodel bathrooms, not the owners of the company (RJ). I made the word BATHS the most prominent element in the logo by making it larger and using all capital letters. I also gave it the most contrast by setting it in black. I set the words by RJ smaller and used different colors to minimize their prominence as if it were a true artist’s signature. I assume R and J consider their work elegant and artistic. I also know that the owners like the deep red color that I used to set their initials so that red is a default color in the logo.

brand rebrand - baths by rj logo redo. The inclusion of the circles is to add graphical interest and balance to the composition. Circles were chosen because of their soft and, in this case, feminine quality. First the owners are women and second most home interior remodeling such as kitchens and bathrooms will be done under the guidance and budget oversight of a woman. The choice of typography was an effort to create a vintage, mid-century look. I assume the owners appreciate this image because they currently use the typeface Brushscript. I just happen to feel that Brushscript should be taken lightly and used with caution in most cases. That’s it.

Brand, Re-brand. Coolbreeze Logo Redo.

Posted on July 8, 2010 by Seán Coleman
3

OK, I’m posting a bit late again but I actually had more time to work on something new today. I thought about some clients that advertise with my company and decided to re-brand them. Especially ones that don’t have a logo. Or in the case of today’s redo… well just take a look.

logo before

This company's logo needs some help.

The following logo is my answer to providing this company with a serious, professional and mature image. The above logo looks like it was drawn with a marker and scanned. I believe that my redesign makes use of basic, but powerful shape forms and smart use of simple typography to convey not just a clean and simple appearance but also projects durability and trustworthiness.

brand rebrand, coolbreeze logo redo.I made use of a classic shape form to frame the typographic elements of the logotype. The shape is created by cutting away the left and right sides of an oval using the corner of a diamond shape. I added only subtle enhancements to the shape form to give the impression of a three dimensional border. Splitting the shape in half horizontally and using slight tonal shifts in color adds to the dimensional effect. The entire composition conveys a retro feeling to me. I don’t know how long the company has actually been around but conveying a classic image gives potential customers the feeling of longevity and durability, like the company has been around for awhile. It’s not a lie, it’s just good design.

I chose basic but strong typography. For the company name I chose Helvetica Condensed Bold and for the company description I used Clarendon Roman. I used high tracking values to space the characters of the words. This helps to lessen the over powering presence of each of the typefaces which can both seem very forceful. Widening the space between characters allows the typeface to be set at a smaller size but still fill the space required by the frame. An ironic aspect of spacing the characters is that this company is all about air, whether it be heating or cooling. Putting some good air between the characters in their logo is somehow quite fitting.

Finally, the color. The version I like the best is the gray with dark blue. It gives the impression of metal which is an element of strength and durability. On the recommendation of Colleen, I created two alternate color versions. I figure the red one can be used in Winter advertising when the company wants to convey a warm feeling about their image and the blue one can be used in Summer months to convey a cool feeling to their target market.

Brand, Re-brand. The Main Event Logo.

Posted on July 7, 2010 by Seán Coleman

Today’s post is another logo I created a couple of years ago. It is for an event planning company that offers a variety of services centered around catering. Not much to say about this logo mostly because I am too tired to analyze it right now.:) I do like the logo and it is one of my personal favorites, as far as logos that I’ve personally designed. I hope you like it too.

brand, rebrand - the main event logo

I will get back to actually creating something completely new tomorrow. I have a had a busy week relaxing in Florida. I am back in the DC area now but I am squeezing in the last few hours of laziness and relaxation. Tomorrow it’s back to work!
